Handmade Oaxacan Alebrije Bear | Hand Painted Mexican Folk Art | Copal Wood Carving Sculpture

Hand-crafted from copal wood, its fierce expression is brought to life with open, sharp fangs, wide glowing eyes, and striking contrasts of electric blue and fiery orange-red tones. Every inch of this copal wood carving is covered in impossibly intricate geometric patterns—symbolic Zapotec motifs meticulously detailed with fine-line precision that turn a raw piece of wood sculpture into a breathtaking work of Mexican folk art.

Alebrijes are shaped creations based on artist imaginations, dreams, or fantasies. The hand-carved alebrije process uses knives and machetes to shape the copal tree wood, with expert painters making each animal figurine unique. They may be cleaned with a dry or wet cloth. San Martin Tilcajete is a community that concerns itself with the environment, and we reforest our raw materials such as the copal tree.
