What Is Constitution Day & Citizenship Day?
•Posted on September 16 2025
Every year on September 17, the United States observes Constitution Day (also known as Citizenship Day) — a day to recognize the adoption of the U.S. Constitution in 1787 and to honor all those who are U.S. citizens—including naturalized individuals.
Originally, the Articles of Confederation were the controlling document, but they lacked many features that a strong central government needed: there was no judicial branch, and Congress had limited powers. The Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia addressed those gaps, and on September 17, 1787, the Constitution was signed. By summer 1788, the first thirteen states had ratified it.
Congress later designated September 17 as Citizenship Day, and in 2004 it became more commonly known as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, recognizing both the legal document that defines the U.S. and the people who uphold it.
How People Celebrate Constitution & Citizenship Day
-
Flag displays: Government buildings, schools, and many public places often display the U.S. flag. It’s sometimes even required.
-
Educational programs: Schools use the day to teach the history of the Constitution—how it was debated, what it means, and how it shapes citizens’ lives.
-
Public events: Civic organizations, libraries, community centers may hold reading of constitutional passages, discussions, or workshops about civic responsibilities. Some might host events about citizenship, voting rights, and participation in democracy.
What Constitution Day Means in Today’s World
This day isn’t just about a historical document—it’s about understanding and appreciating citizenship: what it means to belong, to participate, to hold rights, and to have responsibilities. It’s also a chance to reflect on how the Constitution continues to shape society, law, civil rights, and civic life.
