At LUV2BRD, we believe that every home deserves unique decor filled with soul, heritage, and craftsmanship. That’s why we are proud to feature Leticia Alarzon Hernández, an award-winning potter from Oaxaca, Mexico, whose creations are a celebration of Mexican folk art and timeless tradition.

From Oaxaca’s Clay to National Recognition

Born in 1963 in a pre-Hispanic village in Oaxaca, Leticia grew up surrounded by generations of pottery-making families. While her father was a baker, she discovered her own path in clay, recalling childhood days spent playing with mud. At 24, she began apprenticing under the renowned Oaxacan master potter Dolores Porras, learning the traditional styles of Oaxacan pottery that continue to inspire her work today.

In 1993, Leticia’s artistry received national acclaim when she won the Gran Premio de Arte Popular in Mexico City for her Olla Grande Bordado, a large vessel in natural, unglazed clay adorned in the traditional “Bordado” (embroidered clay decoration) style. This recognition solidified her reputation as one of Oaxaca’s most talented artisans.

The Art of Handmade Clay Decor

For many years, Leticia worked exclusively in the embroidered clay tradition. Today, she continues to evolve, experimenting with new forms such as face pots, decorative vessels, and handmade clay sculptures inspired by everyday domestic items. Her work blends the old with the new, keeping cultural heritage alive while offering fresh designs for modern homes.

Each piece of Leticia’s pottery is a testament to patience, tradition, and artistry. From shaping raw clay to intricate detailing, the process requires both precision and passion. Behind the scenes, her husband, Leopoldo, prepares the mined clay and assists in firing the kiln—a true family partnership that ensures every piece is authentically handcrafted.
